Environmental Education:
Through educating ourselves and others, we believe that environmental ideals can be made real, and that small community actions make a big difference. You can ask us about particular environmental issues, or find out how to solve particular environmental problems.
The LEC Library:
The LEC has a specialised environment library. The library is reference material only. Photo copying facilities are available (15c per sheet) if you want or need to take information away with you.
How we Operate:
The LEC is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation funded through membership fees and donations, government grants and augmented by some partnership programmes with industry. It has a voluntary Board of management, supported by a team of volunteers.
Volunteering at the LEC:
The LEC provides an excellent opportunity for people to learn new skills, meet interesting people and help to contribute to our local community in a positive way. We currently have several opportunities for individuals who have some spare time.
For up-to-date information on volunteering at the LEC please contact us.
Campaigns and Issues:
Since 1974, the Launceston Environment Centre has campaigned on a wide range of environmental issues - natural and urban, coastal and inland, country and city.
Wins for the environment often require a sustained effort. Our campaign to introduce improved recycling facilities to the Launceston community took more than 15 years, requiring a great deal of perseverance and consistency on our part. Our campaign to reduce air pollution in the Tamar valley have led to changes in emission standards, and helped to bring about the Federal Government's domestic wood- heater replacement scheme.
Research undertaken by us has also assisted in providing the community, councils and other and land management organisations with important information about threatened species and their long-term management. Working for the environment means working with the community to protect natural values such as, forests and bushland, and to minimise chemicals, soil, air water and waste pollution to solve air, noise and sewage pollution problems, as well as protecting public open space and native parklands. It also means working to preserve our cultural heritage, such as urban landscapes, significant trees, wetlands, urban planning, waste management, coastal protection, mining, wild rivers and catchment protection, threatened species, old growth eucalypt & rainforests, wilderness & national parks.
We are your representatives for environmental issues, taking up community concerns and providing support and/or assistance. We are committed to community education and information regarding all decisions that affect our environment.
Now, more than ever, your actions will help to determine the environment that we pass on to future generations.
